National Club Association Foundation Elects Two New Board Members

(Washington, D.C., August 26, 2010)— The National Club Association Foundation recently announced the addition of two new members to its Board of Directors, effective immediately. Jeffrey McFadden, CCM, CCE, and Tammy Tassitano, CPA, were elected to serve on the NCA Foundation Board through 2011.

“We are extremely delighted to have these two individuals join our board to continue building on our outreach efforts to the club community,” said Bob James, Executive Director of Westchester Country Club and NCA Foundation Chairman.  “We know they’ll both be great additions to the board in helping the Foundation support projects and provide resources that would otherwise not be available for the private club industry.”

Jeff McFadden has been the Chief Operating Officer and General Manager of The Union League in Philadelphia for twelve years, but he has been a part of the private club industry for more than two decades.  This past year, The Union League was rated as one of the top five city clubs in the United States on the 2009 Platinum Club of America list. Jeff brings a strong background of foundation management to the board, as he oversees multiple foundations at his club, including the Abraham Lincoln Foundation, the Scholarship Foundation and the Youth Work Foundation.

Tammy Tassitano is the National Director of Club Services and a partner of McGladrey & Pullen, serving as the club/association team leader. With a focus on private country clubs, yacht clubs, resorts and common interest realty associations, Tammy has provided a full range of hospitality related audit, accounting, tax and advisory services for the past 20 years. Tammy is also responsible for McGladrey & Pullen’s annual trends report, Florida Trends in Private Clubs, and has served as the President of the Florida Golf Coast Chapter of the Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals.

NCA Foundation Surpasses Goal for its “Campaign to Shape the Future”

(Washington, D.C., November 23, 2009)—The National Club Association Foundation has exceeded its $50,000 goal for the 2009 Campaign to Shape the Future—three months ahead of schedule and in a difficult economy. Campaign sponsors were John Sibbald Associates and Judd Brown Designs, who provided matching funds for individual gifts to the campaign.

Foundation Chairman Robert James, Executive Director of Westchester Country Club in Rye, N.Y., acknowledged the importance of the broad-based support from the club industry. “We were very excited to achieve this level of success given the challenges facing clubs this year. It demonstrates the support and dedication of the club industry for the work of the Foundation and the critical need for valuable resources to help clubs manage their future.”

The Campaign to Shape the Future was the first major gift-matching grant campaign pursued by the NCA Foundation. Funding provided through the campaign will support the Foundation’s research and education programs to help club leaders be better prepared. Specific projects have included development of a new Legal Reference Guide for Private Clubs and a current project examining the impact of technology for private clubs, a joint endeavor of the National Club Association and the Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals association.

Donations from the Campaign to Shape the Future will also enable the NCA Foundation to continue its support for programs such as the NCA National Club Conference and the annual Trends & Issues: A Private Club Perspective, which provides in-depth analysis of nationwide trends in demographics, economics, workforce and lifestyle issues affecting the private club world.

John Sibbald Associates provides executive search services to private clubs and resorts in the U.S. and internationally. Work is concentrated at such senior positions as general managers, directors of golf and golf course superintendents. The firm has successfully served more than 1,000 clubs of all types and sizes.

NCA Foundation Launches “Campaign to Shape the Future” at Annual Conference

$25,000 Contribution to be used as Matching Funds

(Washington, D.C., April 28, 2009)—The National Club Association Foundation launched the “Campaign to Shape the Future” today during the NCA National Club Conference in Washington, D.C. At the forefront of the campaign is the availability of matching funds, made possible through the generous support of campaign sponsors, John Sibbald Associates and Judd Brown Designs. Together these two firms pledged $25,000 to be used as 100% matching funds for individual donations.

Foundation chairman Robert James, executive director of Westchester Country Club in Rye, N.Y., kicked off the campaign by recognizing John Sibbald Associates and Judd Brown Designs for their gifts and dedication to the future of the private club industry.

The campaign is the first major gift-matching grant campaign pursued by the Foundation, and the goal of the “Campaign to Shape the Future” is to raise $50,000 for the Foundation to fund research, education and resources to prepare club leaders for the challenges of tomorrow. Future projects that will benefit from this campaign are the The Club Law Handbook: A Guide for Private Clubs and their Counsel and The Impact of Club Technology on Shaping the Future Club Experience. The Club Law Handbook will be a definitive legal resource to help clubs manage legal risks and exposure, complete with checklists, policies and step-by-step action plans to pursue if legal challenges arise. The technology project is a joint venture between the Foundation and the Hospitality  Financial and Technology Professionals that will assess technology trends affecting private clubs, including systems, software, Web-based products and services, and IT staffing. The study will help clubs strategically evaluate their technology needs and develop a long-term technology strategy. Both projects are slated to be completed in the next year.

Donations to the campaign will also enable the Foundation to continue supporting annual programs such as the NCA National Club Conference and the annual Trends & Issues: A Private Club Perspective, which provides in-depth analysis of nationwide trends in demographics, economics, workforce and lifestyle issues affecting the private club world. The Foundation is one of the two premiere sponsors for the National Club Conference in 2009.

NCA Foundation Supports Private Golf Club Study by National Golf Foundation

(Washington, D.C, May 1, 2008)—The NCA Foundation, the National Club Association's charitable arm, announced today that it has awarded a grant to the National Golf Foundation (NGF) in Jupiter, Fla., to support the NGF’s upcoming publication, The Future of Private Golf Clubs in the U.S. The grant will be used to distribute the report to private club presidents, owners and managers throughout the country this summer.

The report will provide an in-depth look at the state of private golf in the United States. Based on interviews with club operators, financial data provided by clubs and a nationally representative survey of golfers, the report will look at the current state of private golf as well as the future outlook for the nation's 4,400 golf clubs. Detailed study results will be presented to attendees of the NGF's upcoming Golf Business Symposium in Dallas on May 15.

"The NGF undertook this research to help clarify the current financial state of private clubs and the outlook for their future," said NGF president and CEO Joe Beditz. "We've read with interest numerous articles over the past several months dealing with the state of private golf. And, while these articles have done a good job of detailing the problems being experienced by private clubs, we felt that a more rigorous effort was called for to accurately quantify not only the extent of the challenges, but also what successful operators are doing to overcome them."

Susanne Wegrzyn, president and CEO of the National Club Association (NCA), said that the NGF study fit perfectly into the mission of the NCA Foundation, which focuses on research and education in the private club field.

“The NCA Foundation was established in 1993 in order to fund critical trends studies and underwrite educational programs and research to help private clubs prepare for their future,” said Wegrzyn. “We were glad to be able to provide this grant to the NGF which will be used to ensure that the report achieves the widest possible distribution to private clubs."

Some results from the study:

  • For every private club that has closed its doors over the past decade, another 10 have converted to public courses
  • The number of private golf clubs in the U.S. today is equal to the number that existed on the eve of the Great Depression
  • After home relocation, financial reasons top the list of why members are leaving clubs
  • Latent demand exists for private clubs, and baby boomers may join in the years ahead
