9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Navigating the Future: The Outlook for Private Clubs Kevin Reilly, Partner, PBMares, LLP
In the spring of 2013, NCA and the NCA Foundation launched a comprehensive research project to gain perspectives on the future of the club industry that would provide clubs a sense of direction with regard to potential changes and how they should respond. This extensive research evaluated ways in which the makeup of the club industry is shifting, ways to achieve success in membership marketing in an evolving world, the impact of increasing competition for club services, how the club of the future might differ from today, the expanding importance of various club services, and who will likely be the future members of clubs. Working with The McMahon Group, research was targeted to club industry leaders, including club directors, club managers, leaders of industry allied organizations, and hospitality industry educators. Through interactive forecasting, focus groups and surveys the project identified ways clubs can take advantage of opportunities to be more successful and/or protect themselves from challenges presented by changing trends. This program will cover the findings of the research and the implications for clubs.
10:30 to 10:45 a.m. Networking Break
10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Membership Development & the Admissions Process: A Balancing Act for Private Clubs Robyn Stowell, Partner, Stinson Morrison Hecker LLP
The admission of a new member is one of the most important decisions at a private club, yet the economic pressures that many clubs face today lead them to consider policies and procedures that undermine the legal protections that privacy affords. This program covers the broad spectrum of issues that can arise in the admission process of a truly private club and offers some practical guidelines for addressing them. Highlights include the impact that “easing” your club’s admissions process will have on its private status and the importance of member engagement in increasing membership rolls.
12:15 to 1:30 p.m. Lunch
1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Government Matters: Health Care Reform & So Much More Brad Steele, Vice President of Government Relations & General Counsel, National Club Association
As the voice of the private club industry, NCA is actively engaged in protecting and defending the interest and well-being of private clubs with leaders in Washington. This presentation will provide an insider’s guide to what’s going on in Congress and how those on Capitol Hill are directly impacting your club’s day-to-day operations. This session will also provide an in-depth look at the new healthcare law and many other legislative and regulatory issues affecting private clubs.
