Webcast: Winning, Losing and Sweating Capital Project Votes

Major capital projects are among the most consequential decisions a private club will make. Developing the right plan is only part of the challenge. Clubs must also build member understanding, establish confidence in the process, navigate competing priorities, and ultimately earn enough support to move forward.

 

Drawing on three capital project votes with very different outcomes—a decisive win, a loss and one that was closer than expected —this webcast will examine what drives member support and where even well-intentioned planning processes can fall short.

 

Joel Livingood, GM/CEO of Interlachen Country Club, and Brett Posten, board member and Green Committee chair at The Kansas City Country Club, will use their experiences to explore the process from both the professional management and volunteer leadership perspectives. They will discuss what happened before each vote, what worked, what did not and what they would do differently today.

 

The conversation will examine the factors that shape member sentiment well before a ballot is distributed, including board alignment, member engagement, project scope, financial considerations, communications and the timing and sequencing of key decisions. It will also address how clubs can better understand opposition, identify concerns earlier, and avoid assumptions about what members value or are willing to support.
