The role of the private club general manager looks very different than it did a decade ago. Today's GM is expected to lead a complex hospitality business, manage capital projects, navigate a tight labor market, adopt new technology, and serve a membership whose expectations are shifting with each new generation. The job has grown. The question for club leaders is whether the way boards recruit, support, and evaluate their GM has grown with it.

This webcast examines the forces reshaping the GM role and what they mean for the board and GM relationship. Drawing on a board member's perspective and industry research on executive hiring, the session explores why GM transitions remain so common, what a leadership change truly costs a club beyond the search fee, and why many executive hires struggle for reasons that have little to do with technical skill.

Attendees will leave with a practical framework, and a set of reflective questions boards and GMs can use together to strengthen alignment before a transition becomes necessary. Topics include:
  • The forces that have expanded the modern GM role
  • The full financial and cultural math of GM turnover
  • How board structure and rotation affect GM success
  • The questions boards should ask themselves, not just their GM
Designed for board members, committee chairs, and general managers, this session offers a proactive, constructive look at one of the most important relationships in a private club.
